The epidural steroid injection procedure is usually an outpatient procedure. Epidural injection is used to treat pains, swelling and any kind of inflammation connected with neurological conditions that could affect the root of your nerves.
Since epidural injection is injected on the epidural space, let us know where exactly this area lies. The epidural space is situated between the dura (one of the membranes of the brain) and the interior surface of the spinal cord. This space is full of fat, arteries and veins.
This is an outpatient procedure which less approximately 45 minutes.

Pain management is one of the most important aspects of care for chronically ill persons
As with all health care issues, get qualified medical opinion regarding any suggested treatments. Pain management is a medical specialty. In our facility we have pain management specialist if your own physician seems unable or unwilling to provide adequate control for your pain.
If you have any incidents of allergies to certain drugs, make sure you convey about them to your heath care provider. Do not consume anything or drink for 7 hours before the procedure. For patients who have diabetes, they need to inform about the medication they are taking to the doctor. The medicines have to be adjusted before and after the spinal injections.
If you have some illness like a flu or fever, you can tell the doctor to reschedule your appointment. But when you come for the appointment, it is effective if you have some pain present. This will help you know if the injection has stopped or blocked your pain.
During the procedure your heart rate and breathing is checked. You may be sedated if the doctor finds it apt depending on your condition. With the help of X-ray imagining, the perfect place for the injection to be done is tracked. After the injection, a small sterile bandage is applied on the injected area.
You can resume your normal activities and work the next day.. Follow up with the doctor to evaluate your condition on the third day after being treated with spinal injections
After the spinal injections, your condition is monitored. Since you tend to feel pale and weak, you could ask somebody else to do the driving back home
Epidural injection treatment
This treatment involves the injection of a small dose of anti-inflammatory steroids into the epidural space between the dura and the spinal surface. This treatment has lessened or eliminated lower back pain for millions of patients.
The spinal cord can be pinched or compressed by bulging or herniated discs, previous spinal surgeries, bone spurs, or narrowing of the spinal column due to calcification. It can also cause patients to experience numbing sensations and physical weakness. These symptoms, sometimes called sciatic or radicular pain, is usually felt in the same region of the body where the affected nerves have their roots. If the inflamed area can be reduced, then the pain can also be reduced or eliminated. It can save a patient from having to undergo surgery.
Once the treatment has been administered, the patient’s vital signs will be monitored and the sites of the injection will be sterilized and covered.
TPI (Trigger Point Injection) treatment
If a muscle is injured without being treated, and particularly if the muscle is not frequently used, chronic muscular pain can arise. This is sometimes referred to as myofascial pain syndrome. The treatment for it, TPI, involves intra-muscular injections of a local anesthetic. It is generally given when lesser treatments have not been effective.
The TPI numbs the muscle area temporarily, and relaxes the muscles. This gives the patient the opportunity to participate in more rigorous and helpful physical therapy, and allows the muscles to be worked and blood flow to return to them. Occasionally, steroids can be used in conjunction with the local anesthetic injection.
If TPI treatment results in relief from pain, the treatments can be stopped. If they are not experienced to help on the first try, the treatment will not be continued, as it is not likely to improve the pain. In these cases, other treatments should be explored. However, if the treatments give the patient partial relief on the first try, a series may be administered. Botox® can also be helpful when injected in the same way, but only if basic TPI treatment has had good results.
What is Chronic Pain?
While acute pain is a normal sensation triggered in the nervous system to alert you to possible injury and the need to take care of yourself, chronic pain is different. Chronic pain persists. Pain signals keep firing in the nervous system for weeks, months, even years. There may have been an initial mishap -- sprained back, serious infection, or there may be an ongoing cause of pain arthritis.
Common chronic pain complaints include headache, low back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or to the central nervous system itself), psychogenic pain (pain not due to past disease or injury or any visible sign of damage inside or outside the nervous system).
