Two weeks before surgery, do not take aspirin or any aspirin-containing products, such as Motrin, Advil or other cold or pain medicines. Ask your doctor if you do not know which medicines it is safe to take.
Avoid Vitamin E, herbal or fish-oil supplements. Do not take stimulants or smoke. Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum until two weeks after surgery.
One week before surgery, arrange for all childcare and pet care to be taken care of. Arrange for a responsible driver to take you to and from surgery—do not rely on a taxi service. Arrive at your appointment with pre-admission testing done, if this is required for your surgery.
The day before surgery, make sure you know the time and date of your surgery. Make sure your transportation has been arranged. Be sure that you have a bedroom or recovery area prepared for when you get home with comforts such as extra pillows, books, and blankets.
You will not be able to eat or drink after midnight on the night before your surgery. You can take prescription medication with a small amount of water.
The day of your surgery, you should shower and wash your hair. Wear clothing that is loose and comfortable, preferably with buttons down the front. Do not wear make-up, perfume, contact lenses, or lotion. You may not eat before surgery. Do not bring valuable items such as watches, jewelry or money.
Bring prescription medicine with you. Be sure to leave plenty of time to get to the operation place, to lessen the stress of surgery day.
